What you’ll learn in this article…

  • Western Governors University and Eagle Gate College-Murray charge every graduate student the same rate, in-state or not.
  • An MSN is the usual baseline for nurse executive roles, while a DNP differentiates system-level candidates.
  • Verify CCNE or ACEN accreditation before applying, since it affects aid and nurse-executive certification eligibility.

Director-level nursing postings in Utah typically ask for an MSN or higher plus documented management experience, which leaves many charge nurses and unit leads asking which graduate credential to pursue , an MSN, a DNP in nursing administration, or a post-master's certificate. The programs here are ranked from Utah colleges only, and each card is labeled MSN, DNP, or post-master's certificate, with its delivery format (online, hybrid, or campus) as the school reports it.

Tuition, practicum hours, and accreditation status differ more than the program names suggest.

The degree opens interviews, but employers still hire on leadership track record.

MSN Vs. DNP Vs. Post-Master's Certificate: Which Leadership Credential Fits You?

An MSN is the common baseline for nurse executive roles, and a DNP is a differentiator for system-level and academic leadership. A certificate adds coursework without a new degree, so it rarely replaces an MSN where Utah employers post director-level openings that require a master's. Compared with an MHA or MBA, the MSN keeps the nursing-specific lens and the eligibility path for nurse-executive certification, while MHA and MBA programs suit broader healthcare business roles.

Admission Requirements for Utah Nursing Administration Programs

Requirements vary by program and credential, so confirm current details with each school before you apply.

  1. Entry degree
A BSN is the usual starting point. University of Utah accepts a BSN or MSN. Weber State's executive leadership DNP asks for an MSN, or a BSN plus an MBA or MHA. Westminster lists a baccalaureate degree.
  2. Active RN license
All ranked programs require one. University of Utah expects a Utah license by start, and compact-state nurses who move must obtain Utah licensure within 60 days. WGU requires an unencumbered license in your state of residence or employment.
  3. Minimum GPA
University of Utah and Weber State both list 3.0. WGU is competency-based and has no conventional GPA. Westminster states a minimum, but we could not confirm the figure.
  4. Experience
Weber State requires two years of full-time RN experience, or four part-time. WGU's BSN-to-MSN requires none. University of Utah's leadership track states no work requirement.
  5. Background check and drug screen
Expect a background check at Westminster, Weber State, and WGU (before clinical work). Westminster and Weber State also require drug screening.
  6. Prerequisite courses
University of Utah lists physiology, pathophysiology, and statistics. Westminster lists pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment, statistics, and research. WGU does not require statistics.
  7. Resume and statements
Westminster requires a resume. Check each program page for recommendation letters and personal statements.
  8. Can ADN-prepared RNs apply?
Yes. WGU's RN-to-MSN accepts an ADN or diploma. Otherwise, complete an RN-to-BSN bridge first, then apply to a graduate program.

Graduate Tuition at Utah Nursing Leadership Programs: In-State Vs. Out-Of-State

Western Governors University and Eagle Gate College-Murray charge the same graduate rate to every student, whether or not they live in Utah. At Weber State, Southern Utah University, and the University of Utah, out-of-state rates run roughly two to three times the in-state rate. These are published sticker prices for tuition and fees, not what students actually pay after grants and scholarships, and the programs differ in credential and length, so the bars are not total program costs.

Cost, Financial Aid, and Return on Investment

Return on investment for a nursing leadership credential comes down to two numbers: what you pay to finish and what the credential adds to your nurse administrator salary afterward. Utah's graduate options span a wide range on the first number, and the second is harder to pin down.

What the Ranked Schools Cost

Net price is the average a student pays after grants, and it is an approximate institution-wide figure, not a graduate-program price. Public schools come in lower: Weber State about $10,300, Southern Utah University about $10,500, and the University of Utah about $16,200. The private sector costs more: Western Governors University about $12,500 and Eagle Gate College-Murray about $27,300.

Program-level median debt, the 10-year monthly payment, and program-level earnings (such as pay one year after finishing) are not yet available for these programs. We will not substitute institution-wide earnings or debt, because those blend in every program at the school.

Realistic Tuition Ranges

  • Southern Utah University certificate: 12 credits, about $7,635 total tuition.
  • WGU post-master's certificate: $5,050 per six-month term across two terms, plus a $200 resources fee. Flat-term pricing means finishing faster can lower your total.
  • University of Utah Post-MS DNP: 35 credits, about $34,200 in 2026. The 2026-27 fee schedule lists $1,075.50 per credit, so confirm the current total before budgeting.
  • Westminster University DNP: $1,438 per credit across 32 credits, or $46,016. A $15 per-credit graduate fee could bring that near $46,500.

So a certificate runs roughly $6,000 to $10,000, while a doctorate runs roughly $34,000 to $46,500.

Aid Routes Worth Pursuing

Start with the FAFSA, which opens federal unsubsidized loans. Grad PLUS rules for new borrowers changed in 2026, so ask each financial aid office about current limits.

Next, check employer benefits. Intermountain Health and University of Utah Health both offer tuition assistance, but annual caps vary by role and status.

For repayment help, the Utah Health Care Workforce Financial Assistance Program has cited awards up to $45,000 for a three-year commitment with a 20% site match. Published amounts differ by source and provider type, and the award describes at least 20 hours a week of direct patient care, so a pure administrator may not qualify. NURSE Corps repays 60% of qualifying nursing loans over two years, and 25% more for an optional third year, but it requires service at an eligible critical-shortage facility. If you work for a nonprofit or government employer, Public Service Loan Forgiveness may also apply.

The Practical Takeaway

Get your employer's reimbursement cap in writing before you choose. A cap that covers a $6,000 certificate in full may cover only a fraction of a $40,000 DNP, and that gap often decides which credential makes sense.

What Health Services Managers Earn in Utah

Nurse administrators fall under the BLS occupation Medical and Health Services Managers, so this is the closest wage benchmark available.

Practicum and Residency Hours in Utah

The practicum is where you trade convenience for breadth: finishing hours at your current employer is easy to schedule, but a placement somewhere new exposes you to a different leadership culture. Most programs let you weigh that choice yourself, within limits.

MSN and Certificate Practicums

An administrative practicum in a nursing leadership program is project-based. You work under a nurse leader preceptor on something like a staffing, quality, or budget initiative rather than at the bedside. Hour counts vary by program, and many schools allow you to propose a project at your own organization if the work is outside your usual job duties and your preceptor is not your direct supervisor. Confirm that rule before you enroll.

The University of Utah's post-master's nursing leadership certificate (15 credits over three semesters) carries no clinical hours. Western Governors University's post-master's Nursing Leadership and Management certificate includes a Field Experience, an improvement project that applies prior coursework, but no fixed hour count is published. WGU also requires an active RN license in the state where you live or work.

DNP Hours and Residency

AACN sets the DNP standard at 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours. Prior master's hours can count toward that total. The University of Utah's post-master's DNP leadership track counts 480 clinical hours toward the 1,000 and verifies any earlier MSN practicum hours on acceptance. Its policy defines the hours broadly as direct care, indirect care, and leadership combined. Westminster University's current DNP catalog lists 1,000 clinical hours with a 300-hour program minimum, so earlier master's hours count, but ask admissions about transfer caps and whether your hours need to be leadership-focused.

Preceptors and Placement

Preceptors are typically master's or doctorally prepared nurse executives, directors, or chief nursing officers with nurse administrator duties and responsibilities. Who finds them depends on the school. The University of Utah guarantees in-state placement. Westminster and WGU have not published a placement policy we could confirm, so ask directly whether you secure the preceptor or the school does.

  • Timing: Affiliation agreements between a school and a health system can take weeks to months, so start the conversation a full term early.
  • Online and hybrid students: Utah residents can generally complete hours locally, but confirm a placement is approved in your state before you commit. The University of Utah's guarantee covers Utah, and placement outside Utah is not established.
  • Host sites: Ask each program which Utah hospital systems and clinics it currently partners with for leadership practicums.

CCNE and ACEN Accreditation: What to Verify

Accreditation affects whether you can sit for nurse-executive certification exams, qualify for federal financial aid, and be taken seriously by Utah employers and doctoral programs. The table below shows what we could confirm for each school in our ranking. We could not confirm an accreditor, accredited levels, or review date for Utah Tech University, so verify with the school before you apply. To check any program yourself, search the CCNE accredited programs directory or the ACEN search tool, and confirm that the specific degree level you want (master's, DNP, or certificate) is covered, not just the school as a whole.
