What you’ll learn in this article…

  • Nine Indiana schools offer MSN, post-MSN DNP, or post-master's leadership programs.
  • IU Kokomo's MSN track requires 36 credits and 225 clinical hours.
  • Leadership is the top post-master's DNP concentration nationally, at 39.3% of enrollees.

Can an Indiana RN move into manager, director, or chief nursing officer roles without relocating? Nine Indiana schools list graduate nursing administration or leadership programs, including online MSN options at Ball State and IU Indianapolis, plus campus and hybrid tracks.

Credit loads and practicum hours set the timeline: IU Kokomo's 36-credit MSN requires 225 practicum hours, while Ball State's 40-credit online MSN requires 180. Most degree paths assume an active RN license and a BSN; post-master's certificates start from an MSN. The first decision is credential level: an MSN for early leadership training, a DNP for executive systems work, or a post-master's certificate for nurses who already hold a graduate degree.

MSN Vs. DNP Vs. Post-Master's Certificate: Which Leadership Credential Fits You

Leadership is the largest concentration among post-master's DNP enrollees nationally, at 39.3%, ahead of generalist (21.4%) and nurse practitioner (16.5%) tracks.1 That shows where many experienced nurses head when they want top jobs, but it does not mean every leadership role requires a doctorate. Here is how the three credentials line up for Indiana nurses planning their next move.

Match the Credential to Your Career Target

  • MSN in nursing administration or leadership: Entry usually requires an RN license and a BSN, though some schools offer RN-to-MSN bridges. It targets nurse manager, director and service-line roles. It is the shortest full-degree route, built around a supervised leadership practicum. It is best for BSN nurses moving from charge or unit leadership into formal management.
  • DNP in nursing administration or executive leadership: Entry is a BSN for post-baccalaureate DNPs or an MSN for post-master's DNPs. It targets chief nursing officer, vice president of nursing, system-executive and academic leadership roles. It is the longest path, with the heaviest practice-hour load plus a final scholarly project. It is best for nurses aiming at the executive suite or faculty posts.
  • post-master's nursing administration certificate: Entry requires an MSN in another specialty, such as NP, education or informatics. It targets the same management roles as the MSN without repeating graduate core courses. It is the shortest option, with focused leadership coursework and a smaller practicum. It is best for master's-prepared nurses pivoting into administration.

Credit and hour totals vary by school. See the practicum section below for Indiana specifics.

What Employers Actually Ask For

The MSN remains the most common credential among nurse executives. Many CNO and VP postings list a master's as the minimum and name a DNP, MHA or MBA as preferred. Experience weighs heavily too, because nurse executive roles typically call for 10 to 15 years in practice.2 In a National Council of State Boards of Nursing survey, employers generally saw DNP graduates as bringing broader leadership, quality improvement and evidence-based practice skills.3 Even so, hospitals mostly required the doctorate only for executive positions, while academic employers were more likely to insist on it.

Compare Curricula, Not Program Names

Titles such as "Nurse Administrator," "Nurse Executive Leader," "Leadership & Systems Innovation" and "Nursing Leadership" often describe the same competency set. Look past the title to the course list, the practicum structure and how well the curriculum prepares you for the nurse leader certification you plan to earn.

If you are weighing an MSN against an MHA, see the FAQ at the end.

Admission Requirements for Indiana Nursing Leadership Programs

Most Indiana graduate nursing leadership programs ask for the same core file. Details such as GPA floors, experience and prerequisite courses vary by school, so use this as a checklist and then confirm the specifics with each program.

  1. Core requirements
Expect an unencumbered RN license (Indiana or compact; IU online options may accept a multistate license where the practicum takes place), a BSN from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program, official transcripts, references and a personal statement. IU Kokomo also lists a CV or resume, a background check and drug screening.
  2. BSN vs. ADN entry
The IU Indianapolis, IU Online, IU Kokomo and Indiana State pages we reviewed list a BSN (or an MSN for post-master's DNP tracks) as the entry degree. We did not find a published RN-to-MSN bridge on those pages. If you hold an ADN, ask each admissions office directly about your options.
  3. GPA floors
A 3.0 is the common benchmark at IU, Indiana State, Purdue Northwest, Bethel and Indiana Wesleyan. Some programs publish lower minimums: IU South Bend lists 2.8, American College of Education 2.5, and Purdue Global 2.5 or higher.
  4. RN experience
IU's MSN administration programs list one year of clinical experience. IU graduate certificates cite 1,800 hours (about one year full time) for applicable certificates. Bethel lists one year as preferred.
  5. GRE and prerequisites
IU graduate certificates state the GRE is not required. Indiana State does not state a GRE policy on its page, so ask. Statistics is a frequent prerequisite, and Indiana State asks for graduate statistics and graduate nursing research.
  6. DNP entry
IU's Post-MSN DNP requires both a BSN and an MSN with a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Indiana State's post-master's DNP requires an MSN, and current MSN students may apply in their final semester.
  7. Start terms and deadlines
IU Online lists rolling admissions with fall, spring and summer starts. Indiana State applicants choose a term in GradCAS. We did not find published deadlines for the other programs, so check each program page.
  8. Confirm before you apply
Criteria change each admission cycle, so verify requirements on the official program page before you submit.

What Indiana Nursing Administration Programs Cost and How to Pay for Them

For nurse administrators, Indiana's public universities generally cost less than its private ones, but the sticker price depends on per-credit rates, program fees and credit totals, not the school's category alone.

Public vs. Private: What the Data Shows

Institution-wide net price after aid runs from about $3,968 at Indiana University-Kokomo and $6,079 at Purdue University Northwest to $16,898 at Indiana Wesleyan and $18,610 at Bethel. Treat these as institution-wide averages, not quotes for a graduate nursing program. Listed in-state graduate tuition also favors public schools: Purdue Northwest is $6,638, Indiana University-Kokomo $8,925, and Indiana University-Indianapolis $11,180. Nonresident rates at IU campuses climb much higher ($20,256 to $28,964).

Per-Credit Rate Times Credits Equals the Real Price

Multiply the rate by the credit total, then add fees:

  • Purdue Northwest MSN Nurse Executive: $512.16 × 32 credits is roughly $16,389.
  • Bethel MSN: $555 × 33-34 credits is roughly $18,315 to $18,870.
  • Indiana Wesleyan Health Systems Leadership certificate: $595 × 19 credits is $11,305.
  • University of Southern Indiana: the 2026-27 resident rate is $446.94 per credit, plus a $100 per-credit MSN program fee ($150 for DNP). Out-of-state students in online nursing administration programs pay $496.94.

At the doctoral level, University of Indianapolis charges $828 per credit for its post-master's and executive DNP, and Indiana University School of Nursing lists $735 for 2025-2027. Indiana State's published 37-credit DNP comparison is $17,094 for residents and $33,633 for nonresidents, before other fees. Across Indiana, DNP totals are reported at $27,000 to $48,000.

Budget for extras: application fees ($40 at USI, $70 at IU), Indiana State's $100 seat fee, a USI clinical fee for students outside its home area, and the background checks and drug screening that programs like IU Kokomo require.

Employer Help and Federal Aid

IU Health publishes up to $5,250 per year in tuition assistance, with no up-front cost for select programs. For Community Health Network, Ascension St. Vincent and Parkview, ask HR for current caps, since we do not have published figures for them.

On the federal side, unsubsidized graduate loans remain available, but Grad PLUS rules changed for new borrowers in 2026, so confirm current limits with each school's aid office. The HRSA NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program can help if you work at an eligible critical-shortage facility, though eligibility depends on your employer and role.

A Caution on Debt and Return

Program-level median debt is not published for these programs, so do not substitute institution-wide figures. Return-on-investment ratios in our data, from about 1.4 to 2.9 across these schools, are institution-level proxies, not program results.

In-State Vs. Out-Of-State Graduate Tuition at Indiana Schools

These bars show published graduate tuition and fees for the nursing administration programs in our directory. They are sticker prices, not the net price shown in the rankings. Online students outside Indiana may pay out-of-state rates at public schools, while private schools typically charge one rate, so confirm your own rate with the bursar before you apply.

Practicum Hours, Credit Totals and Completion Times for Indiana Students

IU Kokomo's MSN Leadership and Systems Innovations track runs 36 credits with 225 clinical hours across six semesters, which is a useful anchor because the rest of Indiana's programs cluster close to it. IU East publishes 37 credits and 300 practicum hours1, while IU Northwest lists 37 credits and is one of the few programs to state a calendar estimate: roughly seven semesters, or about four years when taken year-round part-time.

Why the Numbers Don't Always Match

You will see different credit and hour figures for the same school depending on where you look. IU South Bend is the clearest example: its 2022-2023 bulletin lists 36 credits, while the 2025-2026 curriculum page references an additional 12 credits and 300 practicum hours. The programs themselves do not reconcile these, so treat the most recent program page as authoritative and confirm with an advisor before you enroll. Third-party roundups often differ because they convert credits to clock hours using their own formulas or quote outdated catalogs. When in doubt, the number on the program's current page wins.

How Long It Takes

Full-time MSN leadership students generally finish in about two years; part-time schedules stretch that out, as IU Northwest's year-round, four-year plan illustrates. Post-master's certificates are shorter by design: UIndy's Nurse Leader Graduate Certificate is 9 credits, and IWU's online Health Systems Leadership certificate folds roughly 260 practicum hours into its coursework with no in-person residency. DNP timelines depend on your entry point. A post-MSN DNP like IU Indianapolis's Executive Leadership track is 38 credits and can move faster, while a BSN-to-DNP path takes longer because you are building the full practice-hour foundation from scratch.

DNP Residency and Practice Hours

AACN expects DNP graduates to complete 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours, and both IU Indianapolis and UIndy's Online Executive DNP build to that total. At IU Indianapolis, up to 475 eligible clinical hours from a prior MSN may transfer toward the 1,000; if you have fewer qualifying hours, the program may require additional credits before you begin. Residency is completed on the degree-granting campus.

Who Finds the Preceptor

Policies vary. IU East assists with placement but approves student-suggested sites only when a clinical contract exists or can be established1. IU Indianapolis's MSN Leadership track lets practicum happen in your Indiana home community, arranged cooperatively. IWU explicitly permits practicum in your own approved workplace. Always ask whether a separate unit or non-supervisor preceptor is required before you assume your current employer qualifies.

Frequently Asked Questions About Indiana Nursing Administration Programs

These are the questions Indiana nurses ask most often when comparing graduate leadership options. Answers draw on program delivery and admission data in our directory, and details can change, so confirm specifics with each school before you apply.

Yes. Indiana University and Indiana University Indianapolis both list their MSN in Nursing Administration as online. Arkansas State University also lists an online MSN Nurse Administrator, but it is based outside Indiana, and its practicum must be in a state where it holds operating authority. For online options nationwide, see /msn-in-nursing-administration/.

Indiana University lists its online MSN in Nursing Administration at 39 credits and about 22 months, with 245 practicum hours. The IU Indianapolis online track lists 37 credits, and IU East lists 300 hours. Credit totals, hours, and pace vary by campus and enrollment status, so confirm the current plan of study.

Choose the MSN if you want to lead nursing teams, clinical operations, or quality improvement. IU notes its graduates can pursue ANCC Nurse Executive or AONL Executive Nursing Practice certification, which also require two years of nursing leadership experience. An MHA is broader, covering finance, policy, and operations beyond nursing, but it is not nursing-specific preparation.

Most MSN nursing administration programs, including the IU online program, list a BSN as the prerequisite degree. If you hold an ADN, look at RN-to-MSN bridge pathways, which combine BSN-level coursework with graduate study. Ask each admissions office whether a bridge route is available and what it requires.

Many nurses do, especially in online programs built for working RNs. IU's online program expects at least one year of clinical experience, and practicum hours can often be arranged near your home community with faculty. Expect heavier demands during practicum terms, so talk with your manager about schedule flexibility early.
